Meeting With Your Students

Always record your meeting accomplishments, goals, volunteer hours, and notes on the Student Tracker

When will I meet with my assigned student(s)?
Each school determines the best time for ASPIRE Advisors to meet with students. Schedules may depend on class schedules, school activities, and volunteer availability. Advisors meet with students only in the school building, with school staff present.

What can I expect in my first meeting with my student?
Your first meeting with a student is your chance to get to know each other. Remember that teenagers may have a different communication style- don't be discouraged if they are not very conversational.

Topics to discuss during your first meeting include:
  • Your background, educational and career experiences
  • Your student’s interest areas
  • The goals of the ASPIRE program
  • Student’s expectations for the advising sessions
  • Student's goals, which can be recorded on the "Student Tracker"
  • Your expectations of the student
  • Expectations for both your and the student’s attendance at advising sessions
  • Schedule for future advising sessions

How often should I meet with my student?
Success with your students depends on regular meetings. Once you and your student decide on which activities you will be helping with and how those activities fit into the monthly planner, you will have a good idea of how frequently you will need to meet.

You may need to be persistent and creative in establishing a regular meeting schedule. Ask for help from your ASPIRE Coordinator if you are having difficulties meeting with your student(s).
