Oregon Promise 2017-2018 Awards
Students can now view their 2017-2018 award information in the OSAC Student Portal. 

For other student support staff who aren't involved with ASPIRE, they can stay updated by joining the Oregon Promise listserv or by visiting the  Oregon Promise page on the OSAC website.

Tuition cost is not the only thing a student should consider when picking a college. Get familiar with this page on the ASPIRE Toolkit. 
Common Application now available. 
The 2017-2018 Common App is now available. With one application, students can apply for admission to over 700 colleges. Mentors and coordinators should get familiar with this application before school starts.

Oregon Promise Updates:
High School Registrars: The final deadline for registrars to verify GPAs in the OSAC High School Portal is July 10. Contact info@oregonpromise.org with questions about GPA verification.
 
Fall Applicants: The final deadline to complete an Oregon Promise application is July 3. OSAC will announce award amounts to students via email in August. Applicants must also complete the 2017-18 FAFSA or ORSAA by July 14. Learn more at www.OregonPromise.org.
 
*2017-18  funding for Oregon Promise depends on the approval of the Oregon Legislature.
Help sophomores and juniors get a jump start and prep for the SAT.
Retired educators make great ASPIRE mentors. They have experience working with youth and have available time to commit to the program. Recently ASPIRE was featured in Oregon Education Association (OEA) - Retired's "Prime Time" newsletter, which is sent to its members throughout the state. Check it out here.
New ASPIRE Coordinator Handbook
We are simplifying the old Coordinator Toolkit and adding it to the ASPIRE Toolkit in the form of an online Coordinator Handbook. On July 1, we will remove access to the old Coordinator Toolkit website. We rely heavily on the feedback of our mentors and coordinators. If you have any suggestions please contact: Leli Fotu at  Leli.e.Fotu@HECC.OREGON.GOV.
Now is a good time to start encouraging your sophomores and juniors to check out the upcoming ACT & SAT testing dates. 
Accepting Aid helps students understand the different types of financial aid and which ones are best to accept. 
ECMC's Understand your Loan(s) explains students' obligations for federal loans. 
Oregon GEAR UP provides its Transition to College Toolkit to help high school seniors through the summer and into their first year of college. This toolkit includes specific strategies to keep students and parents connected.

Oregon GEAR UP provides this TOOLKIT to help high school seniors through the summer and into their first year of college. This toolkit includes specific strategies to keep students and parents connected.
The school year is ending. Time to celebrate the efforts of your high school seniors and your volunteers! Here are some ideas:

The final deadline for Oregon Promise is July 3. However, students are encouraged to complete their application now so that high school registrars are available to verify students’ transcripts.
ASPIRE Summer Bridge Sign Up Form

ASPIRE Summer Bridge Sign Up Form 
Help graduating seniors stay on track to enter their first year of college. Upon completing this form, high school seniors will receive regular communication (reminders, deadlines, and tips) throughout the summer after graduation. 
Have you checked your Volunteer Calendar recently? Take a look at the activities you should focus on with your Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior students. You can find the Volunteer Calendar in the Volunteer Toolkit. 
 

FAFSA Verification Resource Document
Occasionally colleges will ask student to verify their FAFSA information; students will receive instructions directly from the college. Here is an additional resource to assist them with their FAFSA verification process.

Support with IRS Data Retrieval Tool
The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is currently unavailable and will likely be offline until October 2017. Visit this site to learn more information. Use FAFSA Plus+ website for additional resources on helping your students complete their FAFSA. 

Oregon Promise Communication Kit
We need your help! Please become familiar with the eligibility, application and renewal requirements for Oregon Promise by watching this Informational Webinar. Use this same powerpoint Presentation and other tools in the communication kit to help student understand and apply for the Oregon Promise!

This study shows that Oregon Promise has helped many students realize that college can be affordable. Read the study to learn more about the students who are benefiting from Oregon Promise this year.

New Support Webpage For Undocumented Students
Check out this page to find ways to help support students who are undocumented, including students with DACA status, achieve their dreams of a college education. 

State Financial Aid Application for Oregon Undocumented Students: Memorandum
Undocumented students in Oregon ― including students with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status ― should not be dissuaded from applying for state grants that can help them realize their dreams of a college education. The HECC will do everything within their authority and jurisdiction to protect the ongoing confidentiality of the ORSAA information.

OSAC Scholarship Appeal Process 
For those who experienced technical difficulties with the online Scholarship Application on March 3. There is an appeal process. The deadline will be March 31.

Decision Day
Oregon GEAR UP supports a statewide Decision Day event, during which schools celebrate their students’ plans for postsecondary education and training. See if your site is signed up to for this event, or to register your site, visit the Oregon Goes To College Events page.

Current Oregon Promise recipients must file a valid 2017-2018 FAFSA or ORSAA and list an Oregon community college to renew their award. No additional application is required. Remind students to review all eligibility requirements on the OSAC website.

Continued funding for Oregon Promise is subject to Oregon Legislative approval. More information will be available by July 2017.

Feb 15 at 5pm PST: OSAC Scholarship Early Bird Deadline
Complete applications (including transcripts) submitted by this date and time receive an early review, and error-free Apps will be entered into a drawing for one of several $1,000 Early Bird scholarship awards.   

Ford and OCF Scholarships open to Undocumented Students
OSAC scholarships offered by Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) and The Ford Family Foundation are open to DACA and other undocumented students. Need-based scholarships require the FAFSA or ORSAA to determine applicants' financial need. For help on the ORSAA, use our new ORSAA Guide

Renewal Process for Current Oregon Promise Recipients

ASPIRE Staff Update

Lori Ellis, former ASPIRE Administrator, has taken on an exciting new position as Career and College Readiness Specialist. She has been with the ASPIRE team since 2004.  Lori will be leading C3: Career, College, Collaborative, a movement of cross collaboration between the Higher Education Coordinating Commission and other key organizations, committed to improving Oregon’s career and college going culture. 
 
Gary Campbell is the new ASPIRE Administrator.  Gary has been with ASPIRE since 2010 and has worked in the field of education for more than 15 years. He holds a master’s degree in teaching from Western Washington University and a Master of Arts in government from John Hopkins University. He is excited to take on this new leadership role and continue to support all of ASPIRE’s amazing volunteers and coordinators.
 
Randee Nicolay is the newest member of the ASPIRE team as an Access Specialist in southern Oregon. She was first introduced to the ASPIRE program and the field of postsecondary access in 2009 an AmeriCorps member, where she worked as an ASPIRE Coordinator and TRiO Transition Specialist. 

 

 

 

 

Oregon Student Aid Application (ORSAA)
The ORSAA is an alternative to the FAFSA for Oregon students who are undocumented, including students who have DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status. If you have questions about the ORSAA, contact (541) 687-7400 or ORSAAHelp@hecc.oregon.gov
