Mentoring has been proven to be one of the best ways to influence a student and keep them on track. Sometimes it may seem difficult and occasionally frustrating, but your time has impact and you are making a difference in our community and the world. 

Print out an ASPIRE Thank You Note to give to a mentor who has been helping students this year. you can get other ideas about ways to recognize mentors in the ASPIRE Toolkit.

Please reach out to others and encourage them to volunteer for ASPIRE!

This deadline is for Oregon Promise applicants who will start college Spring Term and are graduating high school or completing their GED between October 1, 2017 and February 28, 2018.

This grant is to help current or former foster care youth with post-secondary education and training. Check out our website for more details.
February 15, 5 pm (PST) 
Complete applications (including transcripts) submitted by this date will be entered into a drawing for one of several $1,000 Early Bird scholarship awards. 
If the FAFSA feels a bit daunting for parents, have them start out with this worksheet (available in the ASPIRE Toolkit) from ECMC in English and Spanish.

You can also use this more detailed worksheet directly from FAFSA.gov.
If you are stumped or overwhelmed, check out the Volunteer Calendar. This will help you and your student not get overwhelmed, as you focus on each month's goals.

January is National Mentoring Month
Next month we will be honoring our volunteer mentors for their service. Use these national campaign initiatives to start the discussion around volunteering and mentoring.
 
January 4, 2018- "I am a Mentor Day"
A day for volunteer mentors to celebrate their role and reflect on the ways mentees have enhanced their world. 

January 15, 2018- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
A day to share in the inspirational words of MLK, Jr. and elevate the spirit of service through volunteerism. 

January 25, 2018- #ThankYourMentor Day 

Coordinators- show your appreciation for your volunteers (bake cookies, thank you cards, high fives, etc.)

Volunteers- share your experience and invite a friend to mentor 
Early Bird Deadline is February 15. Share this video with staff, parents and students on how to complete the scholarship application. 
OSAC Scholarship Application Tip 
Winter break is a great time for students to work on their 4 personal statements which are required for the OSAC Scholarship Application. 

Apply for the Oregon Promise Grant
Download Oregon Promise Handout! Encourage students to complete the application now. It only takes a few minutes. Even if students aren't sure about their plans after high school, they should still apply to keep their options open!

Another ASPIRE Fall conference has come to an end. To our ASPIRE volunteers and coordinators, thank you for supporting and inspiring Oregon students.
Fall Conference Presentations and Resource Material
Fall Conference offered a wide variety of topics around college and career exploration and preparedness. Download this and last's years presentations from our great presenters.  
Oregon Student Aid Application 
The ORSAA is now open. If you are working with undocumented students who will attend college next year (whether new or continuing college students), encourage them to check the ORSAA page for additional information. 

Beware of Student Loan Debt Relief Scams
Federal Student Aid (FSA) has taken steps to raise awareness: StudentAid.gov/loanscams. They are also providing a webinar for additional information and training on November 30. Register HERE.
OSAC Resources Available For Undocumented Students
This webinar reviews the resources and additional eligibility requirements for undocumented students, including DACA. The Spanish version of this presentation will be posted soon. 
Finding Funds
This presentation video reviews the financial aid options that are available through OSAC. These include the OSAC Scholarship Application, Oregon Promise, and the Oregon Opportunity Grant.

The Fall Conference is an opportunity for ASPIRE volunteers, coordinators, staff, and other community members across Oregon to come together for a day of learning and collaboration. This year's conference is Friday November 3rd, at Lane Community College. Free continuing education credits will be available for attendees this year.

Oregon Student Aid Application (ORSAA) Updates 
If you are working with undocumented students who will attend college next year (whether new or continuing college students), encourage them to check the ORSAA page on the OSAC website for updates. Press Release on DACA Students
The Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) and partners representing 43 Oregon insitutions issue a joint statement on the DACA program. 

 

Oregon Promise Deadlines Announced
Use this tool on the OSAC website to find out a student's application deadline. This Oregon Promise Handout provides information on rolling deadlines, eligibility requirements, and application guidelines for the Oregon Promise Grant.

Oregon Promise 2017-2018 Awards
Students can now view their 2017-2018 award information in the OSAC Student Portal. 

For other student support staff who aren't involved with ASPIRE, they can stay updated by joining the Oregon Promise listserv or by visiting the  Oregon Promise page on the OSAC website.

Things to Consider when Choosing College 
Tuition cost is not the only thing a student should consider when picking a college. Get familiar with this page on the ASPIRE Toolkit. 
Common Application now available. 
The 2017-2018 Common App is now available. With one application, students can apply for admission to over 700 colleges. Mentors and coordinators should get familiar with this application before school starts.

Oregon Promise Updates:
High School Registrars: The final deadline for registrars to verify GPAs in the OSAC High School Portal is July 10. Contact info@oregonpromise.org with questions about GPA verification.
 
Fall Applicants: The final deadline to complete an Oregon Promise application is July 3. OSAC will announce award amounts to students via email in August. Applicants must also complete the 2017-18 FAFSA or ORSAA by July 14. Learn more at www.OregonPromise.org.
 
*2017-18  funding for Oregon Promise depends on the approval of the Oregon Legislature.
Help sophomores and juniors get a jump start and prep for the SAT.
Retired educators make great ASPIRE mentors. They have experience working with youth and have available time to commit to the program. Recently ASPIRE was featured in Oregon Education Association (OEA) - Retired's "Prime Time" newsletter, which is sent to its members throughout the state. Check it out here.
New ASPIRE Coordinator Handbook
We are simplifying the old Coordinator Toolkit and adding it to the ASPIRE Toolkit in the form of an online Coordinator Handbook. On July 1, we will remove access to the old Coordinator Toolkit website. We rely heavily on the feedback of our mentors and coordinators. If you have any suggestions please contact: Leli Fotu at  Leli.e.Fotu@HECC.OREGON.GOV.
Now is a good time to start encouraging your sophomores and juniors to check out the upcoming ACT & SAT testing dates. 
Accepting Aid helps students understand the different types of financial aid and which ones are best to accept. 
ECMC's Understand your Loan(s) explains students' obligations for federal loans. 
Oregon GEAR UP provides its Transition to College Toolkit to help high school seniors through the summer and into their first year of college. This toolkit includes specific strategies to keep students and parents connected.

Summer Programs 2017
Visit Oregon GEAR UP's site to see a variety of summer programs in Oregon and across the country. These programs will help students build leadership skills and explore careers. The programs are no or low-cost and/or offer scholarships. Apply now! Deadlines are fast approaching.

Oregon GEAR UP provides this TOOLKIT to help high school seniors through the summer and into their first year of college. This toolkit includes specific strategies to keep students and parents connected.
The school year is ending. Time to celebrate the efforts of your high school seniors and your volunteers! Here are some ideas:
  • Thank-you notes
  • End-of-the-year party
  • Award and scholarship assembly

The final deadline for Oregon Promise is July 3. However, students are encouraged to complete their application now so that high school registrars are available to verify students’ transcripts.
ASPIRE Summer Bridge Sign Up Form 
Seniors who complete this form will receive  regular communication (reminders, deadlines, and tips) throughout the summer to help them stay on track to enter college in the fall.

Watch this Informational Webinar to become familiar with Oregon Promise eligibility, application and renewal requirements.
FAFSA Verification Resource Document
Colleges may ask students to verify their FAFSA information and will send instructions directly to the student. Here is an additional resource to assist them with their FAFSA verification process.
